Hi!

I was going to wait until Tuesday to release this episode, but there’s a part of it that’s just so relevant now, that I can’t wait, because something Baratunde Thurston said is just so relevant to the events in Minnesota and Washington right now. So, here is a six minute excerpt of our conversation (which will be released in full on Tuesday, February 3)…

Why are tech CEO's — including Apple's Tim Cook — having so much trouble standing up for what's right? Baratunde Thurston says it's because they don't understand a fundamental lesson of power...

Don't go it alone. Baratunde, the host of Life With Machines and an author, Emmy-nominated storyteller, and technologist, says these powerful people need a basic lesson on community organizing so they don't keep getting "picked off one by one."

Baratunde and I spoke about AI and our collective power to steer the future.

Here Baratunde calls out CEOs — and Tim Cook specifically — for "bending the knee." And this was recorded weeks BEFORE Tim went to the White House last week for a showing of the Melania "documentary" only hours after Alex Pretti was killed.

I encourage you to watch, because it's not just venting. Baratunde also offers very tangible things that we (whether we're CEO's or not) can do put ourselves back in the driver's seat of technology — and democracy.

I’ve posted the clip to YouTube (please follow the show there while you’re at it :)

The full episode with Baratunde is coming on Tuesday, February 3 on YouTube and all podcast platforms. It’ll be the first official episode to bear the new name: Future Around & Find Out. (You are subscribed to the podcast, right? If not, some links: Apple, Spotify, all apps).

Other upcoming guests include:

  • Azeem Azhar, the founder of Exponential View

  • Henrik Werdelin, the founder of BARK, prehype, and Audos, and author of Me, My Customer, and AI.

  • Beth Shapiro, Chief Science Officer of Colossal Biosciences, the de-extinction company that recently brought back the dire wolf

  • Eben Bayer, founder of Ecovative and working on lots of climate-tech ventures

  • Luke Des Cotes, the CEO of Metalab

  • Pablos Holman, inventor, investor, and founder of Deep Futures.

  • and more…

Those interview episode will come out on Tuesdays. And every (FAFO!) Friday, Kwaku Aning and I will have fun getting into the things that struck us that week in the worlds of today and tomorrow. And all of it in service of what builders need to know now.

Anyway, I think I just start my pledge drive routine (I an ex-WNYC after all), so, uh, pledge your support?

If you don’t already get the email:

And if you do get the email, but want step it up… please…

There are a number of tangible benefits of going paid (click the link to see more), but honestly the main one is you support this kind of independent tech journalism. Consider it?

Thanks! And more from Baratunde next week.

~ Dan
